Fertilizer Pre-Buy Can Save Time and Money

It’s that time of year again – time to pre-buy inputs for next year’s growing season.

“Speaking for and purchasing fertilizer in December will pay off most years,” said Cody Lezer, Federated’s Ogilvie location manager, “as this is typically the cheapest price we will see on products.”

Spring demand will drive prices up. “However, it is always hard to know what the market will do,” said Lezer. “Nothing is ever guaranteed.”

Locking in early is typically the best choice, and it also helps with budgeting. “When you know the price of your inputs,” he said, “you can discover your break-even price and watch the grain markets – and make contracts accordingly.”

Pre-buying seed has the added advantage of locking in your varieties before they are gone. “The best varieties for yield and disease defense typically sell out fast,” said Lezer. The best chance to obtain the seed your farm specifically needs is now – and the best discounts on seed are also available now.
